TRACE-DUST: Chemical and isotopic properties as tracers of airborne particles collected from the Estarreja and Provence OHMs: implications to exposure and human health risk assessment
Résumé
Toxic concentrations of potentially harmful elements in ambient air can lead to (1) hazardous impact of airborne PM in the health of the population and (2) contamination of water supplies, edible crops and human food supply.
Estarreja and Provence regions are impacted by industrials activities, road traffic and growing urbanization and their air quality degradation is a major issue in terms of health risks and environmental impact. Exposure to PM has been associated with respiratory symptoms, decreased lung function, worsening of asthma and the development of chronic bronchitis.
Considering that dust is the most important contributor for nonpoint source pollutants to aquatic and terrestrial systems, dust deposition data is relevant information to assess potential impacts on humans and ecosystems.
This multi-proxy study aims at correlating dust origin (using isotopes “fingerprints”) and physicochemical dust properties, to potential risks (magnitude of exposure and bioavailability) in terms of human health and environmental effect.

Janin
Myriam Janin est maître de conférences à l’Université de Nîmes depuis 2012. Docteur en géochimie isotopique de l’Université de Brest (2010), elle est spécialisée dans l’utilisation des méthodes chimiques et isotopiques dans le traçage des processus environnementaux. Ses différents travaux concernent aussi bien l’origine des roches, la traçabilité des produits agroalimentaires, que l’impact des PM, avec par exemple la publication dans Particle&Fibre Toxicology de « Low solubility particles and Trojan-horse type mechanism of toxicity: the case of cobalt oxide on human lung cells»(2015).
Depuis 2014 elle est impliquée dans 3 projets portés par les OHM-BMP et LitMed sur la caractérisation des PM et l’utilisation des isotopes pour leur traçabilité.

Santos
José Francisco Santos is an Assistant Professor of Geosciences at the University of Aveiro (UA). He received his BSc and PhD degrees in geology from the universities of Lisbon and Aveiro, respectively. His main research interests are radiogenic isotope geology, geochemistry, igneous and metamorphic petrology, provenance studies and marine geology. He has been involved in the teams of eight research projects (six already concluded, two still active) funded by Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (Portugal) and one funded by UNESCO/IUGS (concluded). He was the principal investigator of the Petrochron project (PTDC/CTE-GIX/112561/2009), which received funding amounting to 92000 euros. José Santos has participated in different committees at both department and university levels.
